CD Design: Buick & Erlandson

I designed this cd for the musical duo, Buick & Erlandson.  The band members and I had several conversations about concepts for the CD design and then I gave them a few samples to choose from based on our ideas.  The photograph used was supplied by the band, but I did some minor editing and tweaking to it using Adobe PhotoShop.

My Business Card

Here is my current business card.  I plan on changing the image, but keeping the layout basically the same, whenever I need to re-order.  I figure I can showcase more of my original photography and artwork that way.  I just ordered some, so once these are gone I will be changing it up and adding to this post.  You may recognize the giraffe images from my “Photography: Giraffes” post.

Just Because I Love Signs

Here is a random collection of signs that I have photographed.  There are only a couple, for now, but I am sure this will grow soon.  Perhaps I need to do a series on signage, too.  The good, the bad and the downright ugly…or maybe weird.  I am already thinking of some of my favorite signs around town to add.  Enjoy!

Who Doesn’t Love Flowers?

Did you ever really think about how many things flowers are used for?  Anniversaries, weddings, funerals, births, celebrations, decoration….so many uses.  It is obvious that the flower is enjoyed world wide and for many different reasons.  Flowers hold so much meaning to people: perhaps you had tulips in your bridal bouquet because they were the flower your husband gave you on your first date.  Or maybe you love roses because your grandmother grew them in her yard and always had cut ones indoors when they were blooming.  Whatever the reason, flowers are a timeless, classic photographic subject.  Here are a few of my favorite images that I have taken:

The Start to a Series on Hands

I love portraits and I love challenging the traditional format of a portrait.  Obviously the face is the most unique feature, but what about the hands?  Hands do and say so many things.  As a result, they are a fascinating subject to work with.  My plan for this series is to photograph as many hands as I can, male and female, young and old.  I want to hear stories about those hands; learn about what they have done and were they have been.  These images were taken using my DSLR camera and then edited in Adobe PhotoShop.

Photography: The Dog Files

Here are a few of my favorite pet portraits that I have taken.  I thought I would go with the Labrador Retriever, one of each color.  They also happen to be three of my favorite dogs.  All of these were taken on my DSLR and then edited in Adobe PhotoShop.  Please contact me if you would like one taken of your pet.

Photography: Giraffes

It’s no secret, I love giraffes.  I also love it when artists tell stories about their work.  These giraffes are from Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek, Michigan…one of my favorite places to go.  I took my camera, some extra cash and hopped on the bus to “Africa” to go visit these beauties.   I bought a whole bunch of romaine lettuce to feed them and just started taking pictures like crazy.  I must admit that it was pretty tricky, holding the lettuce in one hand while trying to take a picture with my camera.  But, I got a few good ones and the giraffes were handsomely rewarded for their hard work that day.  All images were taken using my DSLR and then edited using Adobe PhotoShop.

Stimulate: A Postcard Design

This is a postcard designed for my group’s, WinkeD, ArtPrize entry, fall 2009.  I collaborated with Andy Dragt and Nathan Winkelman on a multi-media, multi-sensory installation.  I was responsible for all of the graphic design, still image photography and gathering/organizing art supplies for the community created artwork that became part of our installation.

I used one of my photographs of markers and applied a clipping mask using some vector file paint drips that I have to create the image on the front of the card.  We chose a small, square format for the postcard, instead of the more traditional rectangle.  It was printed in full color, on front and back, on glossy paper.  The finished size was 4″ square.

Nathan Winkelman: Business Card Design

This is an example of one of the many business cards I have designed.  The moss photograph is an example of my digital photography and the woodgrain is a stock image.  The cards were printed on matte, recycled paper.

Lily Pads: A Digital Collage Series

This series was created for the very first ArtPeers show in the fall of 2009.  I submitted a proposal to the committee along with examples of my work and then they assigned a venue sight.

I used a piece of dyed and aged paper that I had created for another project (see the Birth of Technology post) for the background on all five images.  I took several photographs of lily pads and chose two to use, one for the diptych and the other for the triptych.  I combined the paper, my digital photographs, some loose, line sketches I had drawn of lily pads and paint drips and drops using digital collage.  Each piece was printed onto archival, matte photo paper.  They were then matted and framed.  The finished framed pieces are 11″ x 14″ each and the actual print size is 8″ x 10″ each.
